Build A Business Of Your Own

A lot of people decide to get into plumbing so they can become self-employed and control their own destiny. In reality the bulk of new career plumbers enter the domestic market working predominantly by and for themselves. When you look at the kind of jobs that are around for anyone who's got a decent work ethic, it's a sensible move. As time goes on, most of your work should come as a result of recommendations from others - always ask for referrals.

Working for yourself means getting on well with everyone around you. Business sometimes comes in from the most unlikely people. Treating customers respectfully and courteously will always reap rewards. As a rule, those working for commercial plumbers will put in around 37-40 hours, Mon-Fri only. However, plumbers working in the domestic market should expect to offer greater flexibility. Working people will want to get to know you first before leaving you in their homes unaccompanied.

Varied and Satisfying Work

There's a good deal of security when you've got the right plumbing skills. You'll be able to turn your hand to any number of jobs. The work is very satisfying, as you're either seeing a job through from beginning to end, or solving problems for people when emergencies occur. Obviously you only need to take on the work you want to do, although it's not a good idea to be too picky at first!

To be competitive but still make decent money you'll need to get good at quoting accurately for jobs. You can either charge a daily rate, or a price for the job. Whichever you do, make sure you've included all your expenses. Once you've done a few, it will all become very routine. The best commercial colleges should include training on setting up in business.

Which Is Best For Me?

All industry recognised plumbing training courses lead to C&G (City & Guilds) certifications as a minimum. Most young people entering the industry straight from school will opt for an apprenticeship style of training by blending on-the-job NVQ training with their FE studies. But adult career movers usually keep their old jobs whilst they study evenings and weekends on the new one. It's the private training companies that tend to attract mature entrants, because they service their needs better. Even though students in commercial colleges train part-time, they can gain knowledge quickly by focusing on the level of training needed for the domestic work they'll be doing.

Useful Add-Ons

Whichever course you decide on, you should emerge with at least basic plumbing skills in sanitation systems, hot and cold water systems and more. It's also worth thinking about taking some extra courses so you can do more of a job yourself. It's very useful to know more about kitchen or bathroom fitting, or have expertise in gas.

You don't have to take everything at once, but add more skills as you go along. Each job will be more cost effective, and leave more money in your pocket. You'll avoid having to fit your work in with other trades people, and present a cleaner more streamlined result for the householder.

To summarise, the most profitable and efficient way to get into the domestic plumbing market is to train with a reputable private training company.
